Lipari is the largest of the Aeolian Islands off Sicily's northern coast, famous for its volcanic pumice quarries and ancient Greek ruins. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers (around 86°F / 30°C) perfect for boat trips to the nearby island of Stromboli to watch its active volcano erupt at night, and mild, rainy winters (around 55°F / 13°C) ideal for exploring the 4th-century BC Greek walls and the archaeological museum in the town of Lipari. You can hike to the summit of Monte Pilato for views of the crumbled pumice quarries, or in spring, swim in the clear Tyrrhenian Sea without the summer crowds.
