Kunene is a remote region in northwestern Namibia, famous for the Skeleton Coast's shipwrecks and the world's highest red sand dunes at Sossusvlei-though those are actually in a different region (Kunene is known for Damaraland and the Himba villages). The climate is harsh and dry, with summer temperatures from October to April reaching over 104°F (40°C), perfect for early morning game drives to see desert-adapted elephants and lions, while mild winters from May to September with 70°F (21°C) days are best for trekking to the Brandberg Mountain's White Lady rock painting. In winter, you can quad bike along the Huab River or visit the Twyfelfontein rock engravings, but summer brings afternoon thunderstorms ideal for photography of the rugged landscape.
